OMYA Standardises on Malvern ® Mastersizer ® 2000 for Particle Analysis Worldwide

OMYA AG ( Oftringen, Switzerland), the world's largest supplier of Ca-carbonate based industrial minerals, has standardised on the Mastersizer ® 2000 from Malvern® Instruments for particle characterization in its production and R&D facilities worldwide.

The Mastersizer 2000 is now the OMYA Group's standard equipment for all production sites handling dry Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) in the particle size range 1 to 100 microns. The system is also being used in OMYA's R&D centres where a wide range of different materials are characterized in order to provide production control and support the development of new products.

According to Peter Belger, Head of Group Quality Management at OMYA, the company has a standard evaluation procedure for the selection of new instrumentation. All existing laser diffraction instruments were included in the project that ultimately resulted in selection of the Mastersizer 2000 as the system that best fulfilled OMYA's evolving requirements for particle characterization.

"We required a particle sizing system which offers easy operation and maintenance, a high degree of robustness and cost-effective operation across all of our operating sites" said Peter Belger. "We also looked for experienced suppliers who can provide assistance in applications development and effective world-wide after-sales support."

OYMA's commitment to achieving consistent product specifications from all their manufacturing sites was an important factor in the decision. "As far as performance is concerned, the results obtained need to be accurate and in agreement with existing specifications. Measurements must also be reproducible when carried out in different places and on different instruments and must provide information that is comprehensible to customers and external laboratories."

The flexibility of the Mastersizer 2000 system and its easy-to-use software was seen as being critical in achieving this. Peter Belger again: "Routine use of Standard Operating Procedures and minimal maintenance requirements associated with the Mastersizer 2000 are essential in plant laboratories. At the same time, however, the flexibility of the Mastersizer 2000 software and its wide measurement range are important in R&D."

The Mastersizer 2000 is an automated, laser diffraction-based particle size analyzer. Easy to use, with exceptional reproducibility it is the preferred option across a wide range of applications for the measurement of wet and dry samples with particles in the size range 0.02 - 2000 microns.
