ODVA Networks Increase Acceptance as International Standards

EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet renewed as SEMI standards; CompoNet is certified as an IEC 62026 standard

Ann Arbor, Mich., USA, - ODVA announced the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) organization has renewed EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet as standards in its sensor bus network communications activities. SEMI is accountable for all global standards used by semiconductor equipment manufacturers.

"The renewal of EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet as SEMI standards indicates the continued demand for tool-level network connectivity," said Rolf Enderes of INFICON and chair of the ODVA Semiconductor Special Interest Group. "Companies turn to these networks because they are based on commercially off-the-shelf technology and deliver a comprehensive suite of messages and services for semiconductor applications."

EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet are designated by SEMI as an E54 standard. This standard recognizes networks that enable communication between intelligent devices in a semiconductor manufacturing tool. In addition to SEMI, EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet are supported by a number of other international standards, including IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.11, ISO/IEC 8802-3, IEC 61158, IEC 61784-1, IEC/PAS 62413 and ISO 15745.

In related news, CompoNet was unanimously approved as an IEC 62026 standard. CompoNet, which is designed for applications requiring a significant number of simple sensors and actuators, provides high-speed communications, configuration tools, efficient construction, simple set-up and high availability - all on a single network.

"The Japanese market has widely adopted CompoNet due to its advanced configuration and diagnostics capabilities," said Tianbing Li of OMRON and chair of the CompoNet Special Interest Group within ODVA. "CompoNet's recent approval by IEC as a 62026 network standard will further expand its acceptance in the global marketplace."

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the world's leading organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. The 62026 standard applies to interfaces between low-voltage switchgear, controlgear and controllers.

"CompoNet, DeviceNet and EtherNet/IP are all built on the Common Industrial Protocol, which enables seamless communication from the device to supervisory-level systems without the added cost and complexity of bridges and proxies," said Katherine Voss, executive director, ODVA. "Their breadth of acceptance as international standards demonstrates the value they bring in helping manufacturers deploy interoperable, multivendor systems."

About ODVA

Founded in 1995, ODVA is a global association whose members are comprised of the world's leading automation companies. ODVA's mission is to advance open, interoperable information and communication technologies in industrial automation. ODVA recognizes its media independent network protocol, the Common Industrial Protocol or "CIP" - and the network adaptations of CIP - EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CompoNet and ControlNet - as its core technology and the primary common interest of its membership. ODVA's vision is to contribute to the sustainability and prosperity of the global community by transforming the model for information and communication technology in the industrial ecosystem. For future interoperability of production systems and the integration of the production systems with other systems, ODVA embraces the adoption of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and standard, unmodified Internet and Ethernet technologies as a guiding principle wherever possible. This principal is exemplified by EtherNet/IP - the world's number one industrial Ethernet network.
