Press release date: October 28, 2010

Norwood Marking Systems introduces PIA-K Enterprises' economical FBM-Micro blister packaging machine with Norwood's affordable 53LT thermal transfer printer at Pack Expo booth #2000. This new integrated table-top system packages solids, liquids and powders into unit doses and prints fixed and variable text and graphics on blister packs. Ideal for OTC and regulated pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, the FBM-Micro with 53LT printer maximizes production flexibility while minimizing equipment costs.

The FBM-Micro blister packaging machine with 53LT thermal transfer printer thermoforms, fills, prints and seals up to 80 units per minute, depending on the blisters that are being formed. The system offers a forming area up to 50 mm wide and an index of 25 mm or 50 mm long. It can achieve a deep draw of up to 25 mm. The flexible blister machine produces class "A" packages in a wide variety of pharmaceutical-grade materials, including UV barrier films. It can be sanitized and changed over to handle a new product and blister size in less than 10 minutes with no tools required.

The 53LT is Norwood's most economical high performance thermal transfer printer that is priced competitively with most hot stamp systems. It enables customers to affordably print fixed and variable text and graphics on packages. With its best-in-class thermal print head and 300 dpi resolution, the 53LT can print the product name, National Drug Code (NDC) number, lot code, expiration date, barcode and more onto each blister, as needed.

PIA-K Enterprises can design the FBM-Micro as a semi-automated machine or integrate a solid, liquid or powder feeding system to provide a fully automated solution. If needed, the semi-automated machine can be installed and later upgraded in the field to achieve full automation.

Designed and manufactured in the U.S., the FBM-Micro with 53LT printer complies with GAMP 5 guidelines and can be equipped to meet FDA 21 CFR part 11 requirements. It is ideal for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturers and contract packers with small unit dose packaging requirements. Its affordable price makes it perfect for packaging "toxic" products such as penicillin. Producing robot-ready packages, the FBM-Micro is ideal for small- and medium-size hospitals and long-term care facilities. Its deep draw capability makes it especially suitable for consumer goods such as hardware.

Norwood's 53LT thermal transfer printer comes standard with an operator keypad and Windows-based full-featured label design software. With full clock and calendar functions as well as serialization, the 53LT can print fixed and variable data. Text, graphics and a wide array of barcodes, including RSS linear and composite versions, can be printed both horizontally and vertically. The printer can be equipped with an optional external Ethernet device to enable remote changeovers via the plant-wide network.
