POSTVILLE, IA - Norplex-Micarta, the leading manufacturer of high performance thermoset composites, has recently invested in new state-of-the-art dielectric test equipment for its in-house material testing laboratory. As part of its 1.5 million dollar capital growth expenditure over recent months, the company has installed a new Phoenix Technologies AC Dielectric Test System (Model 6CCE100-5/D149X) to measure dielectric properties in composites used for electrical insulation applications.
Dielectric testing determines the voltage intensity a material can be exposed to before it begins to break down. Dielectric strength is tested by inserting copper electrodes into a composite and gradually increasing the voltage to extremely high levels until the composite dielectrically breaks down. This test simulates the environmental factors that an electrical insulation composite would undergo on a daily basis.
Testing can be conducted on any of Norplex-Micarta's cured composites, including tubing, sheet, and molded products. Norplex-Micarta's composites are used in various electrical applications, including motors, generators, control devices, and power distribution units.
