Nonin Medical to Demonstrate First-of-a-Kind Medical Monitoring Technologies at MEDICA 2013

MINNEAPOLIS — Nonin Medical, Inc., a global leader in noninvasive medical monitoring, today announced that the company's Nonin Labs division will be demonstrating the world's smallest regional oximetry system and the first Apple iPhone®/iPod®-enabled regional oximeter at Hall 11, Stand D42, at MEDICA, Nov. 20-24, at the Messe in Dusseldorf, Germany. The technologies are investigational and do not have a time-table for commercialization.

"Nonin Medical has strong history of creating noninvasive medical monitoring technologies that change the practice of medicine and improve the quality of patients' lives," said Phil Isaacson, Executive Director and Chief Technology Officer for Nonin Medical.

"When Nonin invented the first fingertip and wireless fingertip pulse oximeters, we enabled pulse oximetry monitoring to expand beyond clinician use and hospital settings in convenient, affordable ways.  Similarly, we anticipate that these investigative technologies -- because of their compact size, portability and connectivity -- could bring more convenience, value, functionality and choice to the marketplace," Isaacson said.

Regional oximetry, or rSO(2), is a noninvasive medical monitoring tool that continuously detects oxygen saturation status in the brain and tissue beneath the sensor. It is typically used in intensive care environments such as during surgeries or in pediatric intensive care units.

The first technology to be demonstrated -- the world's smallest regional oximetry system -- consists of Nonin's patented SenSmart™ Universal Oximetry signal processor with an embedded battery and Bluetooth® Smart wireless technology to allow it to connect to any monitor leveraging Bluetooth Smart. The technology can plug into Nonin sensors for both regional oximetry and also pulse oximetry interchangeably. The technology will be demonstrated with connectivity to an Apple iPad®.

The second technology to be shown -- the world's first Apple iPhone/iPod-enabled regional oximeter -- is a sleeve that fits a fourth-generation Apple iPhone or iPod which houses an embedded Nonin SenSmart Regional Oximetry sensor. Once attached and placed on the site of interest (such as the forehead), the measurement values can be viewed on the phone's screen, both numerically and graphically on a trend.  Software features allow the data to be reviewed, saved or sent like any Apple iOS® application.

In addition to these investigative technologies, Nonin Medical will be featuring its commercially available pulse oximeters, regional oximeters, sensors, and capnographs at Hall 11, Stand D42, including the new SenSmart universal oximetry system.  Nonin's new 3230 Bluetooth® Smart and 3231 USB OEM/telehealth finger pulse oximeters will be featured at the CTIA Wireless Health Pavilion, Hall 15, Stand E04, Kiosk 23.

About Nonin Medical, Inc.

Nonin Medical, Inc. designs and manufactures noninvasive medical monitoring solutions. The Company invented fingertip pulse oximetry and introduced the first interoperable, fingertip pulse oximeter with Bluetooth® wireless technology. Nonin also developed the first regional oximetry system that automatically accounts for pediatric brain tissue development variation when measuring oxygen saturation levels. This year, Nonin introduced in Europe the world's first universal oximetry system combining pulse oximetry and regional oximetry into one system. The Company also introduced the world's first medical device featuring Bluetooth® Smart wireless technology: the Nonin 3230 Bluetooth Smart OEM finger pulse oximeter for eHealth/telemedicine applications.

Nonin Medical is the recipient of Frost Sullivan's 2013 North American Pulse Oximetry Devices Product Quality Leadership Award. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minn. with an additional distribution and service center in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Nonin distributes its pulse and regional oximeters, capnographs, sensors and software to health professionals and consumers in more than 125 countries. The Company has more than 200 OEM partners worldwide. For more information, visit www.nonin.com.
