Press release date: January 7, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS — Nonin Medical, Inc., the inventor of finger pulse oximetry and a leader in noninvasive medical monitoring, today announced that its Nonin 3230 Bluetooth® Smart finger pulse oximeter was selected as one of 12 finalists for the 2014 Bluetooth Breakthrough Awards Program. The award is sponsored by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). The award recognizes products launched in 2013 that are innovative, easy-to-use, convenient, reliable and have a large market appeal. Nonin made the announcement at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. More than 200 entries were received by Bluetooth SIG, who will announce the winners in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

"After reviewing hundreds of submissions, we are thrilled to introduce the finalists for the Bluetooth Breakthrough Awards. All finalists encapsulate the powerful yet practical innovation made possible because of Bluetooth Smart technology," said Suke Jawanda, Bluetooth SIG Chief Marketing Officer. "The Nonin Model 3230 stood out for its outstanding implementation of Bluetooth Smart, creating a health monitor for both patients and for medical personnel that is extremely easy to use and power efficient."

"Nonin Medical would like to thank the Bluetooth SIG for once again recognizing us as a leader in advancing remote patient monitoring and simplifying healthcare," said Mark VanderWerf, Vice President of eHealth for Nonin Medical. "Nonin invented the wireless finger pulse oximeter in 2004 with our Onyx® II Model 9560. The device featured Bluetooth Classic radio technology, and garnered a Bluetooth SIG award."

"Nonin's new Model 3230 is one of the first medical devices to incorporate Bluetooth® Smart wireless technology," VanderWerf added. "Bluetooth Smart simplifies device pairing and has a lower power draw than Bluetooth Classic technology. Bluetooth Smart also costs less to integrate, so we are able to offer customers the Model 3230 for half the cost and twice the battery life of our Model 9560 -- with the same accuracy and durability we are known for."

The primary challenge of earlier versions of Bluetooth devices was pairing the device to a system, which requires the entry of unique identifiers in advance. A secondary challenge was ease-of-use for patients. The new 3230 overcomes both of these challenges with a totally new user experience. The device and the system pair automatically. The 3230 also features a new large screen with a graphic interface that guides the patient in proper use of the device using Nonin's exclusive CorrectCheck™ technology.

Another innovative feature is SmartPoint™ capture, an algorithm developed by Nonin that automatically determines when a high quality measurement is ready to be wirelessly transmitted. This helps to ensure that each reading transmitted by the Model 3230 is accurate.
