Nicholas Winters recognized for work on packaging standards.

A member of ASTM International since 1978, Winters has run his own consulting business (Harbor Associates LLC) and served various organizations.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 17 March 2009-Consultant Nicholas Winters of Avalon, N.J., has been recognized with the ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow. The Award of Merit is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

Winters was cited "for outstanding leadership, guidance and technical contributions to ASTM International Committee F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging in developing and publishing global standards in support of the flexible packaging industry."

A member of ASTM International since 1978, Winters is a past chair of Committee F02. He works on several F02 subcommittees and task groups and is chair of Subcommittee F02.40 on Package Integrity. For his contributions, he received awards of appreciation from F02 in 2001 and 2006. He also serves on Committee D10 on Packaging.

Winters spent more than 25 years as senior group leader/research principal at Kraft Foods Inc., where he supported multiple worldwide Kraft research centers and divisions and provided expertise as an internal consultant and project manager in several areas including package development, distribution packaging and systems, and package evaluation. Since 2004, he has managed all North American packaging labs for Kraft Foods as a contractor. At his consulting business Harbor Associates LLC, which he founded in 2002, his clients include multinational consumer product companies, regional food producers, package equipment manufacturers and testing labs.

In addition to his work with ASTM International, Winters is a member TAPPI and is a certified packaging professional of the Institute of Packing Professionals (IOPP). He has been awarded two patents for distribution packaging innovations and has been recognized several times with technical achievement awards from Kraft Foods.

A graduate of Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y., where he received a bachelor's degree in ceramic engineering, Winters received his M.B.A. from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Ill.
