Press release date: February 26, 2007

February 26, 2007, Nashua, New Hampshire. NextComputing, creators of the first flextop, portable super computer, the NextDimension, release environmentally friendly emissions numbers.

NextComputing is known in the HPC (high performance computing) world as designers of high performance, very small footprint computers. They are probably the most widely known for the innovative design of the first flextop computer, the NextDimension, distinctive with its high performing AMD Opteron(TM) processors and extensive I/O and memory options housed inside a box the size of a briefcase. Small space friendly, the system takes up a fraction of the room a comparably equipped desktop workstation consumes. What is not so well known is that NextComputing's NextDimension family of flextops is very environmentally friendly as well.

Typical desktop computer wattage consumption sits at about 100 watts. High performance computers increase this number dramatically, the processors alone often consuming as much as 190 watts. For high performance computer manufacturers, the choice of processors utilized is the key component for greening the machine. NextCom uses 55w AMD Opteron(TM) processors in its flextop computers, dramatically reducing power consumption with little performance sacrifice versus the 95w parts found in many high performance desktop workstations. When used for 80 hours, in a given week, our system reduces CO2 emissions by 636 lbs. per year over the same machine utilizing 95w parts. This also saves the end user approximately $60 year for each machine. With the number of computers businesses maintain ever increasing, the savings adds up quickly.

"The use of the environmentally friendly 55w AMD Opteron(TM) parts was a choice we made for several reasons; a key determining factor was the positive effect on the environment. NextComputing doesn't have a separate (green) line of high performance computers, simply because all of our computers utilize the highest efficiency parts available. In effect, our entire product line is eco friendly," relates Bob Labadini, President and CTO of NextComputing.

Standard desktop monitors tend to use even more wattage than the computers they accessorize, and can range from 50-150 watts. NextComputing's NextDimension family of computers battles this inefficiency in two ways. With the NextDimension Pro HD and Evo HD models, the monitor is integrated, adding less than 15 Watts overall energy consumption to the machine.

Alternatively, NextComputing created the thinnest, lightest weight, flat panel monitor available. It is also very eco friendly, consuming less than 15 watts of energy. Using the company's standalone monitor, or an integrated HD version system instead of a regular monitor, saves about 343.2 lbs of CO2 and $31.80 per year, per system. In total, using NextComputing's NextDimension system versus a competitive high performance system can save as much as 661.2 lbs. of CO2 emissions per year, assuming an 80 hour per week utilization rate and an average electricity cost of $.09/kwh.
