Press release date: November 4, 2008

Chris Turner will review cells that can deliver under unusual performance conditions

Columbus, Ohio - November 4, 2008 - Chris Turner, director of battery technology for Nexergy, Inc., a leading manufacturer of battery packs and chargers, will address lithium ion cell evaluation and performance at Battery Power 2008, an international conference highlighting the latest developments and technologies in the battery industry. Turner will speak Tuesday, November 11, at the two-day conference in the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas.

Turner, an expert in the strategic development of portable power solutions, will discuss the performance of a variety of lithium ion cells, highlighting those that can deliver under "unusual conditions" such as shallow cycling and extreme cycle life.

"A cell manufacturer's data sheets typically give the performance of cells under conditions that encompass the majority of usage conditions that are a reflection of their customer base," explained Turner. "For most lithium ion cell manufacturers, the largest segment is, of course, the consumer electronics segment made up largely of the mobile phone and notebook PC OEMs. However, lithium ion is now commonly used in many non-consumer applications that include portable medical devices, power tools, military devices, asset tracking, various wireless applications and professional electronics of all types. These applications can have a variety of unique requirements that require testing to verify performance under these conditions. That includes operation outside of the normal temperature ranges, high discharge pulse rates, extreme cycle life, fast charging, shallow cycling and intrinsically safe operation."

At Nexergy, Inc. Turner brings more than 15 years of industry experience to the strategic development of portable power applications. For six years, he led battery research and strategic planning in energy technology for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications USA (SEMC). At SEMC, he was an integral part of the global team that successfully introduced lithium polymer batteries to the consumer electronics market in 1999. Before joining SEMC, he worked as a development scientist with AER Energy Resources and Gates Aerospace Batteries. Turner, who holds a degree in chemistry from the University of South Carolina, joined Nexergy in 2005.

The sixth annual Battery Power conference will bring together OEM design engineers and systems engineers as well as technical and management professionals involved in battery-powered products and systems, battery manufacturing, battery technology research and development and power-management technology.
