New Range Guides from EnerSys Detail Its Line of Nickel Cadmium Batteries for Reserve Power Applications

READING, Pa., January 2007 - EnerSys, the world's largest manufacturer, marketer and distributor of industrial batteries, has just published three new range guides for products in its Varta "R" series of nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries. The guides detail the RL (long duration), the RM (medium duration) and the RH (short duration) batteries, which are appropriate for use in reserve power applications ranging from telecommunications, electric utilities and UPS, to railway, emergency lighting and alarm systems.

In addition to providing a general specification chart and battery layout information, the new range guides offer further details on the rugged Varta "R" series batteries, which have a proven long service life of 20 years in stationary operations, along with a long storage life. The guides explain that the batteries operate over a wide temperature of -40°C to +50°C (-40°F to +122°F) and are especially effective at low temperatures and in deep discharge applications, as compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. The guides also mention that the Varta NiCd batteries are housed in translucent plastic cases to make their electrolyte levels visible for easy maintenance, that they feature a large electrolyte reserve to increase the time between maintenance intervals, and that they conform to Europe IEC60623 standards.

The guide for the Varta RL line lists emergency lighting, rail signal and communication, telecommunications, photovoltaic, marine and alarm system applications as those that will most benefit from its low rates of discharge over long periods of time. It states that Varta RL batteries have a capacity range of 11 Ah to 1500 Ah, and can cover backup times of one hour to more than 100 hours.

The Varta RM range guide asserts that the battery's mix of high and low rates of discharge will benefit applications such as rail car lighting, telecommunications, UPS, electric utility switchgear and marine. It lists the capacity range for the RM line from 11 Ah to 1250 Ah and declares these batteries can cover backup times of 30 minutes to three hours.

The third range guide, for the Varta RH line, provides information on their high rates of discharge over short periods of time. The guide states that Varta RH batteries have a capacity range of 10 Ah to 800 Ah, cover backup times of one second to 30 minutes and can be used in diesel starting, UPS and marine applications.
