New Expansion Joint Design to Help Reduce Particulate Build Up for a Major Russian Petrochemical Producer

Project Summary:

o 30" diameter universal expansion joint with multi-ply bellows, covers, liners and test ports

o 36" diameter gimbal expansion joint with multiply bellows, covers, liners and test ports

o 30" diameter gimbal expansion joint with multiply bellows, covers, liners and test ports

Russia is a major exporter of oil and natural gas and its economic growth over the past decade has been driven primarily by energy exports, given the increase in Russian oil production and relatively high world oil prices during the period.

The country has 40 oil refineries with a total crude oil processing capacity of 5.4 million bbl/d. (Oil & Gas Journal) EagleBurgmann EJS recently shipped several complex expansion joint assemblies to one of the largest chemical enterprises in the Russian Federation.

The company, Russian's largest exporter of polyethylene, is a leader in the production pipeline of polyethylene tubes, phenol, acetone, antifreeze, chemicals for oil and natural gas dehydration. (5) large expansion joint units with multi-ply bellows, covers and liners were built to current EJMA standards. The medium was explosive gas with polyethylene powder which often builds up behind the inner sleeve and bellows.

Our new design included purge and braid seals that offered a more porous solution to allows the powder to flow through it easier. Pressures for these expansion joints were 377 PSIG / 26 bar with temperatures up to 329 deg. F / 200 deg C.

Test ports were also included on these expansion joints to detect any leakage and prevent unexpected failure.
