ROSSLYN, VA, May 24, 2007-The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI C18.2M, Part 1-2007 for Portable Rechargeable Cells and Batteries-General and Specifications. Part 1 covers general requirements and information, such as applicable definitions, general descriptions of battery dimensions, terminal requirements, marking requirements, general design conditions, and test requirements, as well as specification sheets for various types of cells and batteries.

Safety requirements are covered in ANSI C18.2, Part 2 for Portable Rechargeable Cells and Batteries-Safety Standard, a separate document.

According to Ramesh Shah, chairman of the ANSI C18.2 subcommittee, this publication applies to portable rechargeable, or secondary, cells and batteries based on nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and lithium-ion electrochemical systems, which include rechargeable batteries interchangeable with primary batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V). Industries that use these products include cameras, toys, and portable computers.

"The standard contains general information, standardized performance and mechanical tests, specification sheets, and all safety tests and requirements," Shah said. "This edition adds consumer product acceptance procedures, such as clarification of rated capacity, cycle life, and application charge capacity."
