PowerWise Line Helps Design Engineers Identify Solutions for Energy-Efficient Systems

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 20 -- Leveraging its heritage and expertise in creating energy-efficient integrated circuits (ICs), National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today unveiled its PowerWise® brand to designate the company's line of energy-efficient, high-performance power and analog signal-path products. National's PowerWise brand signifies:

o Products with individually outstanding performance-to-power ratios o Products that provide an energy-efficient design when combined with other National PowerWise ICso National's Adaptive Energy Management intellectual property

To system design engineers, energy efficiency is defined by a smaller energy footprint, less heat generation, and, in portable devices, longer battery life. To make it easier for these design engineers to find the most energy-optimized ICs available, National is classifying its power management and signal-path products with outstanding performance-to-power ratios and adding them to its PowerWise line. National will continue to launch new PowerWise products, beginning with a new family of high-speed amplifiers next week.

Effectively managing power consumption continues to be an issue of growing importance for system designers. For example, electricity costs at data centers worldwide exceed $7 billion (U.S.) per year, and that number is expected to grow as trends like mobile video drive the need for higher bandwidth and storage (Information Week). Through numerous pioneering products and processes, National's ICs more effectively manage power throughout the entire video-distribution system and in the client device (e.g. mobile handset, personal media player, television, etc.). This results in less energy consumed overall and longer battery life.

National is uniquely positioned to enable energy-efficient systems with its leadership in power management products and design tools; innovation in high-performance, analog signal-path products; proprietary low-power analog process and packaging technologies; and rich portfolio of intellectual property.

Going forward, National will further develop its PowerWise product families, suite of tools, online simulators and documentation to assist customers with their energy-efficient designs. In addition, National will partner with leading technology providers to provide low-power, end-to-end design solutions.

About National's PowerWise Brand National's PowerWise brand reflects the company's energy-efficient product portfolio. It signifies products with outstanding performance-to-power at the component level, as well as products that provide an outstanding, energy-efficient solution when coupled with other National parts. National's PowerWise family of products features energy-efficient power management, operational amplifiers, interface and data conversion products.
