Press release date: April 12, 2007

SANTA FE, N.M., April 12 // -- In support of its continuous improvement goals, the National Agriculture Library (NAL) recently added federated search to its primary Web site http://www.nal.usda.gov/ and launched the design concept Web site - http://www.nal.usda.gov/ndla - for the National Digital Library for Agriculture (NDLA). The concept site will help NAL work with customers, partners and stakeholders to develop quick and easy searching of databases as well as websites relevant to agriculture for things such as weather information, genetic data, images and photographs, citation information, statistics, advice, and the full texts of digital publications like weather reports. NAL has also made it very easy to share comments with them via the "Contact Us" button.

President and CTO of Deep Web Technologies (DWT), Abe Lederman, is pleased to work with NAL and its partners as they help their community of interested users access useful information through one federated search page and added, "They have an edge in that they are not trying to be all things to all people like the big consumer search engines. NAL has responsibility for U.S. agriculture issues such as education and outreach, laws and regulations, and marketing and trade, and they understand where the best information is for these specific purposes. Users don't need 5 million results in .024 seconds. Instead they need the few good results that really answer their questions." DWT provides powerful federated search solutions that help users save time and improve results by intelligently and securely accessing internal, subscription and web databases and sources through one search page.

The concept of federated search is pretty easy but great execution is hard, according to Lance Danbe, VP of Sales and Marketing for DWT: "We fit well with organizations that cater to specialty interest communities and it's important to work closely with them to identify and properly connect to information sources that serve membership needs well. And believe me, not all sources are created equal. Good connectors allow us to effectively access record metadata and full text so we can quickly present a single, relevance- ranked result list, and generate helpful views for analysis. Unfortunately there are federated search solutions that retrieve and aggregate results in some very arbitrary ways and leave users feeling overwhelmed and still lost like consumer search engines often do. NAL is doing it right by providing the sources their users want and carefully listening to feedback to guide future development."

DWT was established in 2002 and is New Mexico-based. It provides state-of- the-art information discovery solutions and is deployed in Fortune 500 organizations, Science.gov, multiple Department of Energy applications and the Defense Technical Information Center. The company received the 2005 and 2006 Flying 40 (fastest growing high-tech companies) award in New Mexico and is on the 2007 KM World List of 100 Companies that Matter in Knowledge Management.
