Press release date: November 28, 2012

WASHINGTON-The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a conference Dec. 4-5 to explore the use of Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, in analyzing and preventing transportation accidents.

GIS is a rapidly expanding group of technologies and analytical techniques that uses geographically referenced data to support complex data integration, advanced statistical analysis, precise investigation and effective visualization of data.

The two-day meeting, held at the NTSB’s Washington headquarters, will bring researchers and practitioners in transportation safety and GIS together to discuss how GIS data, technologies and techniques are applied to improve safety in all modes of transportation.

“GIS technologies reveals trends and hotspots so policymakers and safety advocates can direct scarce resources to appropriate interventions,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. “Direct mapping is another tool in the toolkit for transportation accident investigators.”
