NTSB Details Three Safety Recommendations to NHTSA.July 17, 2012 -
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommends that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) develop performance standards for advanced speed-limiting technology for heavy vehicles (H-12-20). After establishing such performance standards, H-12-21 requires all newly manufactured heavy vehicles be equipped with appropriate devices. Safety recommendation H-12-22 calls for evaluating effects of seat spacing and armrests as factors for potential occupant injury.

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
H-12-20 Develop performance standards for advanced speed-limiting technology, such as variable speed limiters and intelligent speed adaptation devices, for heavy vehicles, including trucks, buses, and motorcoaches.
H-12-21 After establishing performance standards for advanced speed-limiting technology for heavy commercial vehicles, require that all newly manufactured heavy vehicles be equipped with such devices.
H-12-22 Evaluate the effects of seat spacing and armrests as factors for potential occupant injury, and if safer spacing or armrest configurations are identified, develop and implement appropriate guidelines.
