NTM Sensors Awarded ARPA-E Funding to Develop Sensor for Lithium-Ion Battery Monitoring

NTM Sensors, a division of NexTech Materials, Ltd., is pleased to announce that it has been awarded funding by the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E) to develop and demonstrate monitoring systems that improve the safety and extend the operating limits of advanced batteries. In this project, NTM Sensors will apply its innovative gas sensing technology to monitor the health and safety of lithium-ion batteries and deploy it in advanced battery powered community energy storage systems.

"NTM Sensors is proud to be participating in the development of this breakthrough technology that enables the safe implementation of advanced batteries for community energy systems, electric vehicles, and other important commercial applications. We are pleased that ARPA-E has selected our gas sensing technology for this opportunity, and we are excited to be collaborating with DNV and Beckett on this important project," says Dr. Lora Thrun, Director of Operations.

NTM Sensors has established unique gas sensing technology for the detection and quantification of several gases, including hydrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and VOCs, which are commonly emitted by degraded batteries. In cooperation with project leader Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Beckett Energy Systems, NTM Sensors will apply its gas sensing technology with DNV's battery life prediction model to extract greater performance and safety assurance from advanced batteries, enabling repurposing for other applications. The project will culminate with a field demonstration of the battery monitoring system integrated in Beckett's energy storage system powered by second life batteries.
