NSF and UL to Partner on American National Standard for Product Emissions

NSF International and Underwriters Laboratories (UL), both members and audited designators of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), have announced an agreement to partner on a health-based American National Standard (ANS) for volatile organic emissions from building products and interior furnishing products.

Known as NSF/UL 440, the standard will address chemical emissions from indoor materials, furnishings, and finishes. NSF/UL 440 will replace the former GEI-NSF health-based product emissions standard, whose development was suspended earlier this year.

While NSF International and UL each have a long history of developing ANS, this newly founded partnership represents the first time that the organizations will work together to develop a co-branded standard. Under the partnership, NSF International and UL have agreed that the standard will be developed in accordance with NSF's ANSI accredited procedures, with project management support provided by both organizations.

NSF International is an ANSI member and audited designator that writes standards and certifies products for food, water, and consumer goods to protect human health and safety worldwide.

UL is a global independent safety science company working to promote safe living and working environments by the application of safety science and hazard-based safety engineering.
