May 4, 2007 - NMC has received approval from the Office of Naval Research to develop a project that mechanizes the process of weld grinding on hull and deck panels for DDG 1000 Class ships. Mechanizing the grinding process will avoid damaging the surfaces adjacent to the hull plating butt welds, and reduce workforce hazards. Expected to increase productivity and decrease production costs, 24-month project will be applicable to other Navy ship construction projects.

Press release date: March 28, 2007

The Navy Metalworking Center (NMC) has received approval from the Office of Naval Research to develop a project that mechanizes the process of weld grinding on hull and deck panels for DDG 1000 Class ships.

NMC will work with the DDG 1000 Program Office (PMS 500), Naval Technical Authorities, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, and Bath Iron Works to carry out the "DDG 1000 Weld Seam Facing Project." DDG 1000 Class ships require that hull plating butt welds be ground flush with the hull. Mechanizing the grinding process will avoid damaging the surfaces adjacent to the welds, as well as reduce workforce hazards, such as ergonomic strain, eye injuries, particulate and gaseous emissions, and high-decibel noise levels.

The 24-month project is expected to substantially increase productivity and decrease production costs, including a reduction in lost time injuries. There is also a potential weight savings to the ship. Mechanizing of weld seam facing is applicable to other Navy ship construction projects as well.
