NEMA Selected to Hold U.S. TAG Secretariat for Newly Created IEC TC120 Electrical Energy Storage Systems

ROSSLYN, Va. – The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has been selected to hold the Secretariat of the U.S. Technical Advisory Committee (TAG) to IEC TC120 Electrical Energy Storage (EES) Systems.

The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) created Technical Committee (TC) 120 to accelerate the integration of renewable energy and to enable a more reliable and efficient supply of electrical energy.

Considering the increasing demands for renewable energy as well as a reliable and efficient electricity supply, especially in Smart Grid domains, EES systems will play indispensable roles to efficiently and effectively meet market needs.  Appropriate international standardization of EES systems will not only provide markets with affordable solutions, but also help every country to reach practical technologies in order to integrate more renewable energy and to realize smarter electricity supply.  This committee is tasked with developing standardization in the field of grid-integrated EES systems implementing system approaches to understand their complex constructions.

“NEMA, as the trade association of choice for the United States’ electrotechnical industry, is excited to drive this achievement,” said NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis. “Energy storage systems form an integral part of the Smart Grid and its goal of a more efficient, reliable, and secure electricity grid. NEMA is proud of this opportunity to increase adoption and support further innovation.”

The TAG will present consensus U.S. opinions in the development of international energy storage standards and coordinate work of U.S. experts who will serve at the international level. NEMA was selected to administer the TAG by the U.S. National Committee’s Technical Management Committee as a result of the leadership of NEMA Technical Program Manager and Energy Storage Program Lead Ryan Franks.  Franks has developed a deep list of vertical participants in the industry to readily form the TAG and has placed NEMA at the center of domestic energy storage standardization activity.

Anyone interested in joining the U.S. National Committee TAG for IEC TC120 is invited to contact TAG Secretary Franks at 703-841-3271 or ryan.franks@nema.org.

NEMA is the association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. Its member companies manufacture a diverse set of products including power transmission and distribution equipment, lighting systems, factory automation and control systems, and medical diagnostic imaging systems.
