NEMA Publishes ANSI/NEMA FB 1-2007 Fittings, Cast Metal Boxes, and Conduit Bodies for Conduit, Electrical Metallic Tubing, and Cable

ROSSLYN, Va., August 3, 2007-The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI/NEMA FB 1-2007 Fittings, Cast Metal Boxes, and Conduit Bodies for Conduit, Electrical Metallic Tubing, and Cable.

According to Lon Ballard, a member of NEMA's Conduit Fittings Section, ANSI/NEMA FB 1 is the industry standard for manufacturers of conduit and cable fittings as well as cast metal boxes. It ensures that products function as intended in the field and properly mate with cable and raceway system components. "Compliance with FB 1 also helps manufacturers prepare for safety certification of their products," he said.

This standard incorporates several significant changes, including new definitions for NPT, NTC, NTCM, and NPS thread forms, as well as several revised and new tables and figures. It also rewrites requirements for conduit entries, introduces a conduit fittings industry family tree, and includes a new appendix for gauging practice.

New and revised tables indicate minimum L1+2 thread engagement; minimum and maximum turns for NTCM threaded conduit entries; minimum depths to integral bushings in a fitting, conduit body, or box having NTC or NTCM threaded entries; and maximum number of threads in a fitting or box wall with through-threaded entries.

FB 1-2007 covers fittings that are a part of electrical raceway systems and meet requirements of the National Electrical Code® (NEC). These include fittings used with non-flexible tubular raceways, as well as flexible conduit and cable raceways that encompass flexible metal conduits, armored cable, metal-clad cable, tray cable, mineral-insulated cable, flexible cords, nonmetallic sheathed cable, and service entrance cable. It also includes cast metal outlet boxes as well as conduit bodies and covers.

It excludes fittings, boxes, or enclosures that are used in Class I, Division 1; Class II, Division 1; Class III, Division 1; Class I, Zones 0, 1, or 2; and Class II, Zones 20, 21, or 22. There are exceptions for fittings and enclosures that are specifically permitted by NEC.

FB 1-2007 revises and supersedes FB1-2003. It may be purchased for $75.00 by visiting NEMA's website at www.nema.org/stds/fb1.cfm, or by contacting IHS at 800-854-7179 (within the U.S.), 303-397-7956 (international), or 303-397-2740 (fax).

NEMA is the trade association of choice for the electrical manufacturing industry. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end-use of electricity. These products are used in utility, medical imaging, industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential applications. Domestic production of electrical products sold worldwide exceeds $120 billion. In addition to its headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia, NEMA also has offices in Beijing, Sao Paulo, and Mexico City.
