Original Press Release:

NEMA Endorses Industry Data Exchange Association (IDEA) as Sole Preferred Source for Member Company Product Data

ROSSLYN, Va., —The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recognized the Industry Data Exchange Association’s (IDEA) recent milestone accomplishments during NEMA’s annual meeting, Illuminations Weekend, held November 8-9. IDEA is the electrical industry’s preferred source for timely, synchronized manufacturer-supplied product data for the electrical products supply channel.

During 2013, IDEA dramatically increased the volume of marketing data in its Industry Data Warehouse (IDW). The IDW now includes more than 325,000 products each with manufacturers’ specification sheets, attributes, images, and product descriptions. In addition, list price, considered essential to compete for government and other large contracts, is populated for more than 91% of active products in the IDW data synchronization platform. New tools have been added to improve product data from manufacturers at the source, including a normalizing tool to reduce data inconsistences for distributors that will enable rapid integration of data into distributors’ electronic storefronts.

Moreover, manufacturers are now linking their specific product information to the 98-series codes, under license from 1WorldSync, which are used extensively in contractor estimating and ordering systems. Recently, IDEA announced version 4.0 of its Electrical Attribute Schema with its unique, more granular industry product category codes that will enhance distributors’ ability to better represent manufacturer products on their e-commerce sites.

NEMA further cited the significant investments of its members to complete populating their enhanced product data fields in the IDW. For most NEMA manufacturers, the finish line will be reached by the end of 2013; the remainder are expected to reach this goal by the end of the first quarter 2014.

IDEA is jointly owned by NEMA and the National Association of Electrical Distributors. NEMA remains committed to supporting IDEA as the industry’s preferred source for e-commerce and product data.

NEMA is the association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Rosslyn, Virginia. Its 400-plus member companies manufacture a diverse set of products including power transmission and distribution equipment, lighting systems, factory automation and control systems, and medical diagnostic imaging systems. Total U.S. shipments for electroindustry products exceed $100 billion annually.
