NEMA Endorses DOE Collaboration with IDB

ROSSLYN, Va., -In a significant move to facilitate implementation of projects, policy reform, and knowledge dissemination across the Americas, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Luis Alberto Moreno to help launch the Energy Innovation Center (EIC). The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) endorses this collaboration.

EIC will promote innovation and cutting edge technology for the energy sector, serve as regional hub for energy knowledge exchange, and translate energy sector ideas into projects. It will provide technical assistance and serve as a regional incubator for implementation and financing.

According to NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis, this will help secure funding to support infrastructure projects in Latin American countries.

"This represents a significant opportunity to provide much-needed economic and technical assistance throughout the Americas," Gaddis said. "NEMA has offered its support to the center through both our regional office in Mexico City as well as our headquarters here in Washington."

The announcement was made as part of a meeting for DOE's Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas hosted by the IDB in Washington, D.C. on April 15. Participation by NEMA staff included Gene Eckhart, NEMA's director of international markets, and Paul Molitor, industry director for Smart Grid and strategic initiatives.

Sessions during the two-day event included keynotes by Secretary Chu and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as workshops on renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy poverty, and electric power and gas infrastructure aimed at identifying pressing regional issues and potential solutions.

NEMA is the association of electrical and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end use of electricity.
