NEMA Commends Congress for Strengthening CPSC

ROSSLYN, Va., August 5, 2008- Prior to adjourning for the summer district work period, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate overwhelming approved legislation (H.R. 4040) to reauthorize and enhance the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This legislation is the result of a year-long effort in which NEMA was actively engaged.

"I am pleased that Congress recognizes the need for the CPSC to have the staff and financial resources necessary to fulfill its mission of enhancing the safety of U.S. consumers," NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis said. "Electrical manufacturers have always made consumer safety a top priority and will continue to work cooperatively with a stronger CPSC to advance this goal."

NEMA encouraged Congress not to include a provision that would have imposed burdensome product disclosure requirements on manufacturers and to ensure that proprietary business information is protected from public release. Congress sided with NEMA's position on both points. NEMA also partnered with industry allies to ensure that general CPSC safety standards continue to preempt state rules. These provisions will discourage a patchwork of inconsistent state laws and regulations.

NEMA worked to ensure that the final version of the CPSC Reform Act (H.R. 4040) was a vast improvement over earlier legislation approved by the Senate. NEMA will continue to engage the CPSC and Congress during the implementation process to ensure that industry needs are met.

NEMA is the trade association of choice for the electrical manufacturing industry.
