NACD Supports National Chemistry Week

The National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) fully supports the ideals of National Chemistry Week, celebrated nationwide during the week of October 19-25, to enhance the public's awareness of the vast contributions chemistry makes to society and our everyday lives.

NACD encourages its members to get involved in local events during National Chemistry Week where possible. NACD members are compliant with the implementation of the Responsible Distribution ProcessSM's (RDP) environmental, health, safety, and security requirements, which includes Community Outreach, one of the 12 Codes of Management Practice under RDP.

NACD's work with local communities is strong and continues to flourish. To help members in their community outreach efforts, in 1992 NACD founded the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF), a national non-profit organization that works with chemical industry members to foster a greater understanding of the value and benefits of chemistry, chemicals, and chemical safety awareness. Highly successful programs for CEF include hands-on chemistry Activity Guides for grades K-4 and 5-8, and the exciting national annual academic chemistry competition - the You Be The Chemist Challenge for students in grades 5-8. Both programs allow sponsoring companies to educate their local constituents about the importance of chemistry, while building stronger relationships within their community through face-to-face interaction with their neighbors. NACD distributor members and NACD Chemical Supplier Affiliates sponsored 21 Challenges in 2008.

The Foundation's programs make it easy to celebrate National Chemistry Week, by conducting an experiment in a classroom, distributing Activity Guides to local schools, or organizing a Challenge competition in local areas. There are many different ways that CEF programs can be used in the community to engage students in the study of science. For more information, visit CEF's Web site, www.chemed.org.

This year's theme for National Chemistry Week, sponsored by the American Chemical Society, is "Having a Ball with Chemistry," which looks at how and where chemistry is connected to sports materials, such as shoes, equipment, and clothing, and to the biological factors underlying performance, such as physiology, metabolism, and nutrition.
