Solution Ensures Complete Traceability for Food Manufacturer Meeting FDA Regulations

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., March 6 // -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and PartnerSelect Solution Provider Portable Technology Solutions (PTS) today announced that Ce De Candy Inc., manufacturer and distributor of SMARTIES(R), the classic sugar candy line, has implemented an enterprise mobility solution to meet the FDA's new Food Bioterrorism regulation while also increasing the efficiency and accuracy of manufacturing processes throughout its supply chain and warehouse.

The FDA regulation required that food manufacturers maintain records that allow complete traceability for all raw goods and manufactured products by June 2006. To meet the critical mandate, Ce De implemented a mobility solution consisting of the Motorola MC9000 rugged mobile computer running PTS's TracerPlus software, as well as the Motorola WS5100 Wireless Switch, AP300 Access Ports and the ES3000 with Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch. The solution was configured to existing processes at Ce De Candy within one week, with full deployment being finalized within the following four weeks.

"We needed a solution that would allow us to comply with the FDA mandate, but at the same time, not disrupt the manufacturing processes we already had in place," said Rick DePinto, IT manager for Ce De Candy. "The Motorola/PTS enterprise mobility solution met our firm timing and budget requirements, increased our productivity, and improved data quality and process efficiencies, while providing the superior ruggedness that is essential in our warehouse environment."

The Motorola MC9000 is used to scan raw materials received from vendors and placed into inventory in the Ce De warehouse -- each material is immediately assigned a raw material lot number which will eventually be connected to a finished good and its finished goods lot number, as per the Food Bioterrorism regulation. The finished goods lot number will be used for tracking through the pick and pack process and until finished goods are shipped out against a customer order.

"Motorola's manufacturing solutions play a vital role in improving the operations of organizations," said Kevin Prouty, senior director of manufacturing solutions, Motorola Networks & Enterprise. "Enterprise mobility enables organizations like Ce De Candy to transform and streamline current practices, allowing for quicker velocity of products through the warehouse, essentially optimizing all warehouse operations."

Ce De Candy also selected Motorola's multi-year Service from the Start service plan. Service from the Start provides enhanced support beyond the standard product warranty -- including priority response and call escalation, and comprehensive device coverage including cosmetic repair.

"Ce De Candy implemented this enterprise mobility solution from Motorola and PTS because of the continuous customer service and support we received -- from purchase decision through deployment," added DePinto. "And with the multi-year Service from the Start service plan, we are guaranteed top services and support for our investment."
