Oldesloe, Germany

Press release date: January 31, 2011

The coming together of aesthetics and function often produces breathtaking design. The new Life & Style Hotel, Kameha Grand Bonn, has been awarded architectural prizes and been recommended by international hotel guides. It is one of the Leading Hotels of the World. Minimax has fitted out the futuristic building with comprehensive fire protection equipment which is barely detectable for guests. The leading edge systems in the building satisfy German and American fire protection regulations nevertheless. The hotel inspires and fascinates on the highest international standard, in terms of technology and building aesthetics in equal measure.

The Kameha Grand Hotel assumes a central function in the newly developed *Bonner Bogen* area. This is because it is not only the main point of reference for international guests; it also houses the majority of the infrastructure for the entire development area on the Bonn-Beuel bank of the Rhine. A computing centre in the basement supplies the surrounding office buildings with multimedia services. A power supply centre provides electricity, heating and cooling. The basis of the energy concept is shallow groundwater geothermal energy. An intelligently operated aquifer storage system increases the efficiency of the geothermal system by at least 10%. The challenge faced by the fire protection experts at Minimax was to intelligently link the fire protection technologies aligned to respective room usage. Whilst a sprinkler system protects the power supply centre from fire hazards, a Permatec system is used in the 300 square metre sized computing centre. Continual reduction of the oxygen content in the room air prevents fires from starting in the first place.

In the hotel and the underground garages within the area, a total of 4,200 sprinklers provide fire safety. Custom solutions from Minimax are used to ensure that such comprehensive fire protection does not in any way conflict with the harmonious room design of Bonn-based architects Karl-Heinz Schommer. The bulk of the extinguishing system is hidden in concrete ceilings and cavity areas. The Minimax undercover sprinklers are discretely hidden and mounted flush with the ceiling, making way for the water when called upon for fire-fighting. The undercover pipes of the system also hide the extinguishing water supply from the view of hotel guests. In addition, horizontal side wall sprinkler extended coverage have been installed in the hotel rooms and pendent sprinklers in other areas. The fire protection company has also installed the hydrant system and the dry rising mains, with draw-off points for the fire brigade, on all floors.

High aesthetic demands made of the fire protection solution need not mean compromises in safety - the fire protection solution satisfies all applicable VdS regulations and has also been assessed and accepted by FM Global in accordance with the FM standard applicable in the USA. A few months ago, the hotel building won the MIPIM Award in Cannes, the Oscar of the Real Estate Sector, and the European Property Award in London. Minimax has made its contribution with innovative fire protection technology.
