Press release date: November 10, 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 10 /-- MichBio, the association for Michigan's biosciences industry, will present two sessions at its upcoming Expo specifically aimed at manufacturers who are looking to diversify into the medical device market. The MichBio Expo is the premier annual gathering of biosciences professionals in the state and will be held Nov. 18-19 at the Rock Financial ShowPlace in Novi, MI.

Both manufacturing sessions are scheduled for November 19 and include a morning workshop and an afternoon panel discussion. "Michigan's manufacturing base has struggled in recent years with the downsizing of the domestic auto industry," explains Stephen Rapundalo, Ph.D., MichBio's president and CEO. "Smart companies are looking for ways to diversify and lessen their dependence on their existing customers, and the biosciences industry offers multiple prospects. We are anxious to assist them in any way we can."

The morning workshop is an opportunity for manufacturing companies to hear from a variety of medical device and biotechnology companies on their current supply chain structure, what they look for in suppliers, and their current and future procurement needs. In addition to general Q&A, time will be provided for one-on-one discussions with the companies in attendance. Participating MI medical device companies include Accuri Cytometers, Atek Medical Manufacturing, Bioflowtech, ISSYS, Keystone Product Development, MedBio, Stryker, Terumo Cardiovascular Systems, ThreeFold Sensors and Xoran Technologies. The afternoon session focuses on the specific differences vendors face when transitioning into medical device manufacturing, including raw materials, regulatory, environmental, and tooling specific issues.

Expo information and registration is at: www.michbio.org/expo. The first 100 companies to attend will receive a free copy of the FDA booklet "21 CFR Part 820 Quality System Regulation."

The manufacturing programs are sponsored by the Michigan Manufacturers Assoc. (MMA), Jackson Area Manufacturers Assoc. (JAMA), Oakland County Planning & Economic Development, Automation Alley.

MichBio is committed to driving the growth of Michigan's biosciences industry and fostering the collective impact of its members by serving as their unified voice and providing them with education, information, connections and other services. MichBio members include biosciences companies, academic and research institutions, biosciences service providers, and related organizations.
