MAC Machine defeats international competitors to win five-axis machining trophy.

SUDBURY, MA. U.S.A. (June 4, 2009) - Methods Machine Tools Inc., a leading supplier of innovative precision machine tools, announced today that one of its customers, MAC Machine, has been named the winner of the Matsuura 2008 International Five-Axis Machining Competition.

MAC Machine earned the coveted award based on their successful process development of an extremely complex Aerospace part. The part, which most would consider a nightmare, had tool length issues combined with very challenging thin wall conditions. Formerly, this part would have needed to be cast, incurring significant time and expense from a lead time and development tooling cost standpoint.

The part was processed by Randy Barbe, Lead Programmer at MAC Machine, utilizing MasterCam X and CAMplete TruePath software on a Matsuura MAM72-63V multi-pallet system. Working with Mike Kaminski, Senior Application Engineer at Methods Machine Tools Inc., Randy was able to use the latest software and machine technology to make the part from solid billet. Mike trained Randy on the use of CAMplete TruePath software to verify and optimize the process prior to cutting the part on the Matsuura MAM72-63V.

"The engineers that we work with at MasterCam told MAC Machine it was the most complex process requirement they had come across in utilizing their new Mastercam X software with CAMplete TruePath," commented Mr. Dave Lucius, VP of National Distribution at Methods Machine Inc. "But they worked it out and the result was amazing. The first part cut was to print!"

The Matsuura MAM72-63V is a 5-Axis multi- pallet machine designed for processing large geometrically complex components within a work envelope of 24.8"x 17.7"h, having a weight capacity of up to 770 lbs.. This machine has a bridge type construction for light finishing cuts as well as heavy duty roughing in hardened materials. The 40-taper Matsuura Hi-Tech Spindle features a 20,000 RPM / 80mm bearing unit, allowing this five-axis machine unparalleled cutting performance. As a stand alone unit, the Matsuura MAM72-63V provides a large work area and easy access to the part through two operator doors. It comes equipped with an offline post-processor and collision detection software package.

MAC Machine's application was reviewed in confidence by Matsuura engineers and it was selected as the 2008 winner, beating out entries from Germany, Japan, Switzerland, England, Canada, Italy and more. The Matsuura International Five-axis Machining award was presented by Mr. Masahiro Kobu, Director of Quality, from Matsuura Japan. Mr. George McNab, president of MAC Machine, accepted the award on the company's behalf. The entire staff of MAC Machine was present at the award ceremony.
