Mechatronics Certificate Program Grows with Introduction to Mechanical Components Certificate Test

Arlington, VA. - PMMI has launched the Introduction to Mechanical Components Certificate test, the second in a series designed to test workers' skills in the area of mechatronics. The test was developed in cooperation with the Mid-Atlantic Advisory Council, partner schools and industry professionals and is based on an industry recognized skill standard for packaging-related industrial maintenance and mechatronics. With it, the industry and its educational outlets can measure student and personnel knowledge against a nationally recognized standard. Schools can use the skills standards to develop curriculum that meets the needs of industry.

"This is a unique credentialing program designed to assess technical skills in the packaging industry. These assessments were developed by industry, for industry; and they test for the critical skills needed to keep the packaging industry competitive in this global market," says Maria Ferrante, PMMI's vice president of education & workforce development. "As with all technology, the area of mechatronics continues to advance, and the skills these tests challenge are the foundation of designing, building, operating and maintaining the complex types of packaging and processing equipment present in today's marketplace."

Mechatronics is a synergistic approach to mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering and computer science as they apply to the manufacturing environment. As a skill and knowledge set, mechatronics assures that the automation driving modern manufacturing machinery can spur higher productivity and greater output.

The Introduction to Mechanical Components Certificate test, which candidates must pass to earn the Introduction to Mechanical Components Certificate, is offered online and covers the principles and applications of the most commonly found mechanical drive components as used in packaging machinery and systems. Topics include simple mechanical power transmission devices such as shafts, belts, chains, cams and gears with an emphasis on application and troubleshooting.

PMMI released its first mechatronics certificate test, "Introduction to Industrial Electricity" earlier this year. "These certificate tests help students and industry professionals achieve nationally-recognized credentials that confirm their technical proficiency. And because the credentials are transportable, they give workers an added advantage in this changing work environment," Ferrante adds. "For employers, the certificate is a resource that provides an independently validated benchmark for measuring a current or prospective employee's abilities, and helps the employer and educational institutions guide educational efforts in the field."

PMMI worked with its industry partners and The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to develop the packaging oriented mechatronics competency model on which these tests are based. The model can be found at the Competency Model Clearinghouse.
