MeadWestvaco and India's Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Announce Collaborative Research Initiative

NEW DELHI, INDIA - March 3, 2008 - Global packaging solutions leader MeadWestvaco Corporation (NYSE: MWV) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), a scientific research organisation in India, announced that they have signed an Umbrella Agreement for Research & Development Collaboration (UARDC) to partner in collaborative and sponsored research projects that address critical areas in packaging for consumer, agricultural and transportation applications. The announcement was made recently at New Delhi, India after a meeting between John A. Luke, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of MeadWestvaco, and Professor S. K. Brahmachari, Director General, CSIR.

"We are thrilled the collaboration with the research community in India will extend our combined capabilities to develop packaging solutions for some critical problems that are encountered by industry and several brand owners," said Mr. Luke. "We are eager to begin working on projects with CSIR and its institutes that we have identified as areas of mutual interest."

The research partnership will focus initially on key issues such as sustainable packaging solutions, process innovations related to biomass conversion and packaging innovations utilizing advanced materials. The research partnership shall be overseen by a Leadership Innovation Committee, with each have three standing members on the Committee, which will be co-chaired by Dr. S Sivaram, Director, National Chemical Laboratory and Dr. Fred Renk, Director of External Technology, MeadWestvaco.
