Maui High Performance Computing Center Chooses Liebert Technology from Emerson Network Power to Safeguard New Supercomputer

Liebert power and cooling solutions supply high-availability, flexible support for critical Department of Defense research

Columbus, Ohio [March 15, 2007] - Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity(TM), today announced that its Liebert power and cooling technologies were chosen as the mission-critical support infrastructure for a new Terascale supercomputing platform at the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), a U.S. Air Force Research Center managed by the University of Hawaii in Kihei, Maui.

Part of the Air Force Maui Optical & Supercomputer (AMOS) Site, MHPCC provides critical computing support for high-priority Department of Defense research such as simulating turbulent flows around aircraft and modeling laser beam qualities. The addition of a 5,120-processor Dell PowerEdge supercomputing cluster increases the center's computational capability to 62 teraflops. In initial testing, the system delivered a clock speed of 42.39 teraflops, ranking it the 11th-fastest in the world on the November 2006 list of Top 500 Supercomputer Sites (as compiled by researchers from the University of Tennessee and the University of Mannheim). A planned expansion in 2008 will double its computing capacity to 120 teraflops.

MHPCC built a new, 8,000-square-foot data center to house the new supercomputer. A high availability power system featuring multiple Liebert 610 UPS modules working in concert with Liebert power distribution units provides for the electrical needs of the new supercomputer. Liebert Deluxe precision cooling systems, which distribute air through a 36-inch raised floor, deliver precise, reliable control of room temperature, humidity, and air flow.

"This acquisition advances MHPCC to the forefront of high-performance computing and re-establishes it among the leaders of the Department of Defense research and development community," said MHPCC Executive Director Gene Bal. "Because our success depends not only on our processing capability, but also on our ability to deliver uninterrupted access to our resources, we needed world-class infrastructure to support this world-class facility."

MHPCC is located in a remote area that experiences frequent loss of commercial power. "We have relied on Liebert technology since 1993 and have never experienced a problem related to power or cooling - even during earthquakes and tropical storms," said MHPCC Facility Manager Carl Shelton. "We continue to build our critical infrastructure on Liebert power and cooling solutions because of their proven track record of providing the reliability and flexibility it takes to keep our facility running smoothly."

The facility's remote location also created challenges in the area of service. Emerson Network Power addressed those challenges with 7x24, four-hour emergency response in addition to ongoing preventive maintenance services.

"We are pleased to be the chosen provider of the power and cooling infrastructure for an important facility such as the MHPCC," said Bob Bauer, Emerson group vice president and Liebert Worldwide president. "Our ability to power and protect a facility conducting advanced research related to national defense is a testament to the reliability, flexibility and performance of Emerson Network Power's solutions."
