BALTIMORE - Marlin Steel, a leading manufacturer of custom wire baskets and sheet metal fabrications, has been selected for a 2012 "Inner City 100" award by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC). The award spotlights the fastest-growing companies in America's inner cities. The ICIC is non-profit research and strategy organization founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter to support economic growth in urban areas.
"We welcome the recognition from such a prestigious group and are glad to be in the company of other entrepreneurs who are creating jobs in cities throughout America," said Drew Greenblatt, president of Marlin Steel.
The list of winners, chosen from among 1,000 nominees, will appear in Fortune magazine. The awards will be presented on May 9, 2012 in Boston. The program is sponsored by such Fortune 500 companies as Bank of America, Chevron, the Staples Foundation and Goldman Sachs. The 600-plus winners chosen over the years employ nearly 100,000 people in 143 cities. Last year's "100" list included Pandora Internet Radio of Oakland, Calif. and Prometheus Research of New Haven, Conn.
"Congratulations to Marlin on its 2012 Inner City 100 urban business award," said Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "I'm proud to have one of the fastest-growing firms right here in Baltimore and I thank them for helping me grow Baltimore."
ICIC's forum convenes corporate and financial leaders with public officials, civic groups and foundations to develop business-led solutions to challenges facing inner city economies. The rankings are used to highlight "best practices" to encourage business growth and job creation. Although based in the inner city, these companies derive more than half their revenues from regional, national and international sales. Marlin Steel, in fact, now exports a quarter of its product to international markets, including China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan and Australia
Marlin Steel Wire Products fabricates custom wire forms, stainless steel wire baskets and sheet metal fabrications. The company was established in 1968 and has generated revenue and profit six years in a row, despite a rocky economy. Drew Greenblatt has served as president of the Wire Fabricators Association, the trade association for the industry, on the executive board of the National Association of Manufacturers and is the chairman of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Mr. Greenblatt has been invited to the White House on five occasions, and has appeared more than 30 times on national television on the subject of manufacturing and small-business needs.
