Manufacturing Technology Builders Urge Swift Government Action

TO STABILIZE FINANCIAL MARKETS AND ENSURE LIQUIDITY

MCLEAN, VA - Congress and the Executive Branch must ensure that any action taken to restore global confidence in the U.S. financial system guarantees that American manufacturers and other industries maintain access to the working capital necessary to maintain productivity and protect jobs.

"American manufacturing suffers when there's a lack of liquidity in the markets," said AMT President John B. Byrd III today. "For manufacturers, ensuring liquidity is job one for policymakers working on this enormous problem.

"But it also is essential that the plan agreed upon by Congress and the Administration contains achievable measures that quickly restore global confidence in America's financial system and protect our status as the world's number one place to do business.

"Throughout these months of financial stress in the American economy brought on by the problems in the housing and financial services sectors, American manufacturers have been able to maintain their productivity and global competitiveness. But like other industries, American manufacturing technology cannot succeed and flourish without a dependable financial system that has the full and complete confidence of global customers."

AMT (founded in 1902 as the National Machine Tool Builders' Association) supports and promotes the U.S. machine tool industry. AMT members are the global leaders in innovating, producing and implementing advanced manufacturing technology solutions. The association provides them with the latest information on technical developments, trade and marketing opportunities, and economic issues. The association also owns and sponsors the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), one of the world's largest industrial expositions, held every even-numbered year in Chicago. IMTS 2010 will be Sept. 8-13, 2010, at McCormick Place.
