WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 17, 2008 -- National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and Chief Executive Officer John Engler issued the following statement today in response to President-elect Barack Obama's announcement that he has nominated Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO) to be Secretary of the Interior:
Senator Salazar is an experienced and knowledgeable addition to President-elect Obama's energy and environmental team. He is a proven leader on natural resources management and has been a strong voice in the U.S. Senate on land, water and energy issues. We welcome his support for expanded offshore drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), which is a significant part of the overall solution to the energy crisis.
Today's announcement by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) about its largest cut ever in oil production underscores why energy security is critical to America's economic future. We must take every opportunity to tap America's own abundant energy resources to increase domestic supplies and lower prices.
