Legislation Will Streamline the Process for Domestic Production of Minerals, Boosting Competitiveness
Washington, D.C. - National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Vice President of Energy and Resources Policy Ross Eisenberg issued this statement urging Congress to support the Natural Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act, H.R. 4402:
"Today manufacturers are facing a shrinking supply and record demand for essential rare earth minerals. We have these resources in the United States, but the approval process domestically is overly burdensome and prohibitive, often requiring obtaining permits at the local, state and federal level, which can take up to six years or longer. This burdensome bureaucratic process is a big reason China controls more than 90 percent of the world's supply.
This legislation will cut through much of the red tape, which has slowed domestic production to a halt. New projects will be brought online faster and more efficiently, while also preserving important environmental safeguards.
In the recent NAM/IndustryWeek quarterly survey, manufacturers listed the unfavorable business environment, including regulations, as their top concern. With this vote, Congress has a chance to act on a jobs bill that will reduce regulations, enhance the competitiveness of manufacturers and protect jobs."
