Online seminars focus on new technologies for increased shop efficiency
MASON, OHIO - January 2009 - Makino has released the 2009 Q1 schedule of its successful online seminar series, featuring new technologies to increase shop efficiency. Webinars such as "Utilizing Vision Systems with Machine Automation" and "Faster Burning, Lower Wire Consumption With 0.012-inch Wire" that illustrate this theme.
"In difficult economic conditions efficiency is crucial," says Mark Rentschler, Makino's marketing manager. "Shops must learn new production methods and consider high performance technologies to keep current business and win new customers. These events aren't about machine specs--they're about the technologies and machining techniques North American shops must embrace in order to survive."
Since its inception, the Makino online seminar series has broadcast over 80 events with thousands of attendees. Makino has diversified their content with guest appearances from third party technology providers and shop testimonials of new technologies or machining techniques.
Each webinar consists of a 20-45 minute presentation and a Q&A session with the speaker. Registration is required to attend, but all webinars are presented free of charge. A full schedule of webinars is available at www.makino.com/events.

Q1 2009 Schedule
Jan. 15 - Utilizing Vision Systems With Machine Automation - This webinar discusses the use of vision systems with robot automation for part pallet or basket loading and unloading. Part identification, feature location and measurement and pattern matching, even the use of bar codes by robot vision systems for automating horizontal machining centers will also be covered.
Jan. 22 - New Titanium Booster Technology for Ram EDM - At the request of a top tier aerospace manufacturer, Makino has developed specific Titanium booster technology for its sinker EDMs. When it comes to machining extreme L:D ratios or rough and finish machining of large 3-D shapes in titanium alloys, Makino has developed new technology that is both cost and time effective. Jan. 29 - Selecting the "Right" VMC Can Dramatically Impact Your Die/Mold Shop Profitability - Some shops focus on the purchase price of a Vertical Machining Center and overlook critical performance issues that can increase operational costs. This webinar utilizes data from several die/mold work pieces produced on various VMC's, to help you determine the "right" machine for your die mold business.
Feb. 19 - New Sinker EDM Technologies - In the past, making an electrode burn faster meant risky, aggressive burn settings by tweaking amperage and on-time settings, shortening off-times, or programming a higher servo value. See how new EDM technologies can reduce machining times and electrode wear across a wide range of applications, without taking risks. Feb. 26 - Unique 5-Axis Machining Techniques for Mold Lifters, Inserts and Cavities - Both 3+2 and simultaneous 5 axis machining will be discussed using a unique pyramid fixture equipped to handle four parts simultaneously, maximizing spindle utilization and minimizing the setup time required per part. Makino's new D500 5-axis vertical machining center will be utilized to machine both Die and Mold cavities as well as lifters and inserts. Reduction in tool overhangs and improved performance will be illustrated.
March 19 - Faster Burning, Lower Wire Consumption With 0.012-inch Wire - Trying to burn faster on a WEDM has always been a trade off--push the burn and risk accuracy and finish problems, or spend more money for larger diameter wire. New 0.012-inch diameter wire technologies provide the significantly faster burning speed while using the same or lower poundage of wire as if the job were done with standard 0.010-inch diameter wire. Add to this new technology for wire tensioning and you have the speed and accuracy to satisfy the most demanding customers, while still reducing wire costs.
March 26 - PX5, Modified P20, the High Performance Alternative - This webinar will introduce the mold shop to a new steel, PX5, from International Mold Steel, a modified P20. Makino will demonstrate and discuss the machine ability, material characteristics, physical properties of this new steel using various cutting demonstrations.
April 16 - Profitable Machining Strategies for Machining Deep Pockets In Dies and Molds With Over 10:1 Length to Diameter Ratio Tooling - This webinar will cover 3-axis machining with over 10:1 length to diameter ratio tooling, including roughing and finishing. We will discuss cutting strategies, standard tooling and tool holding systems and how to minimize vibration and tool run-out. Learn how to further minimize EDM time, improve your profitability, shorten lead times and increase your competitiveness.
