Consolidating Forklift Rentals

Lift truck distributor describes the benefits of combining its branch rentals into one central department.

Dewitt, NY - Forklift rentals are one of the most important areas for a material handling distributorship to focus on during a down economy. A guest-written article in the First Quarter issue of The MHEDA Journal, the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries, describes the steps Liftech Equipment Companies (East Syracuse, NY) has taken to improve its rental service over the last two years. Liftech General Rental Manager Dave Aylward outlines the process the company followed to consolidate the rental operations of six company branches, located in two states, into one centralized department.

Aylward says the switch has had several benefits for the company, including more equipment moves in the field, lower freight, reduced overtime and higher rental utilization. "Having one centralized location has enabled us to negotiate a consistent price for all our rental-associated freight. We've been able to move the fleet more efficiently on scheduled moves," Aylward writes. "The number of moves per week increased from 68 in 2008 to 77 in 2009, and moving the fleet on a planned basis lowered the cost of doing business and allowed our utilization to have a more controlled focus."

The switch had a positive impact on the company's bottom line, as the company's trucking department turned a five-figure profit after expecting only to break even.
