Daily Forklift Inspections

The MHEDA Journal outlines maintenance and inspection tips for lift truck operators.

Dewitt, NY - The First Quarter 2010 issue of The MHEDA Journal (http://themhedajournal.org), the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries, was mailed to subscribers on January 15 and is now accessible online at www.TheMhedaJournal.org.

This issue features an article by Bruce Dickey, a customer service representative at Dallas, Texas-based Sunbelt Industrial Trucks, a distributor of forklifts and other material handling equipment. Dickey carefully outlines the regulation from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regarding daily forklift operator inspections. Using the exact wording from the written OSHA rule 1910.178, Dickey explains what it means for material handling distributors and their customers. "A very high percentage of forklift users are not aware that they are violating an OSHA mandate if they fail to perform these inspections," Dickey writes. "This creates an opportunity for dealers to become their customer's resource."

Among the suggestions Dickey offers is providing end-users with daily inspection forms and electronic means to perform and track inspections. "Some such products are able to automate the inspection process. If operators' answers to questions asked prior to startup indicate problems with critical safety items, like brakes, the product disables the forklift's ability to be operated," he says.

This is only a smattering of helpful tips offered by Bruce Dickey.
