Material Handler Switches Sides

Patrick Newsome quickly adjusts to a new industry.

Dewitt, NY: As part of its continued effort to highlight the best and brightest young talent the material handling industry has to offer, MHEDA Edge's January "Meet A Young Leader" section features an article from LiftOne's Patrick Newsome. His piece, entitled "Switching Sides," discusses his switch from the construction industry to material handling.

Newsome had more than eight years of experience at Carolina Tractor. He started out as a rental technician, working on heavy equipment. After about five years of doing that, he moved to the company's Monroe, NC, office where he was promoted to rental coordinator. In the new role, he still handled quite a bit of service work but he also had additional responsibilities including transportation and scheduling. Then, when the recession hit, the company did some reshuffling. As part of the reshuffling process, Newsome left the construction side of the business to learn a whole new industry¡ªmaterial handling.

Now, a year into his new industry, Newsome has hit his stride. "I'm learning more about the industry every day," says Newsome. I've got a great team of supervisors and managers here that are helping me along every day. I'm at the point now where I'm effectively handling shipping, receiving, negotiating freight prices, handling inventory levels and anticipating customer needs."
