For the modification of new synthetic materials, additives are crucial to improving mechanical and chemical characteristics.
However, these same additives can decrease the service life of forming molds and machine parts. While filler materials like glass fibers or pigments increase abrasive wear, waste by-products arising during processing can cause corrosion or leave a film on metallic surfaces. The consequence of such chemical and physical mechanisms is premature failure of the mold or poor product quality. The removal and machining of molds and other components for the fabrication of plastics, as well as production downtime resulting from the breakdown of machinery, leads to substantial increases of production costs.
Coating the surfaces with MAXIT® TiN (titanium nitride) does not always lead to sustainable results.
MAXIT® "Tool Management" from Sulzer Metaplas offers appropriate optimization of molds to meet requirements. This concept takes a holistic view of both the production process and the surface of the mold. Strength and toughness can be designed independently of surface hardness and chemistry by adapting diffusion zone and surface of a MAXIT® combination treatment according to the requirements. The combined use of plasma-supported heat treatment and coating facilitates the combination of a hard, resistant surface and tough material core. Because the combined plasmanitriding treatment is always done at low temperatures, processing of a variety of materials is possible without loss of dimension, toughness or hardness.
Substrates with specially low heat treatment temperature like European Standard 1.2767 or carburised steel depending on the coating type, coating can be applied already at 180 - 200 °C.
The range of coatings offered by Sulzer Metaplas offers a broad scope of applications for processing of production tooling for synthetic and elastomer components. The range of use covers molds, extrusion dies, calibration devices, flow conduits and worm gears, commuters and broad slot plates.
The coatings offered include MAXIT® W-C:H carbon-based, low friction, wear resistant coatings. These coatings have proven to be effective on dynamic components, such as ejectors and sliders, because they resist fretting and corrosion in non-lubricated or marginally lubricated conditions with clearly increased wear resistance.
