Long Term Security Solution against Solar Theft

Solar theft is a concern for all players involved in the solar industry. In order to generate higher financial return for project developers, owners, and financiers preventing theft is imperative. Finding a security solution that will remain steadfast for 25-30 years is challenging in an evolving industry. Greg McPheeters, Senior Design Engineer for SnapNRack reported there were many viable options when it came to security, but the long life-span of the panel itself along with the remote location of the array were important factors in choosing a solution.
Alarms, cameras, and fencing posed potential problems with the extra maintenance and monitoring costs involved. They felt panels could still be stolen while authorities were being dispatched. Greg found a custom security screw manufactured by Bryce Fastener Inc. in Gilbert, AZ and liked how the fastener could be integrated into the fixed tilt SnapNRack design. SnapNRack is a mounting system designed to quicken installation, cover up exposed wires, give an overall smooth look, and meets wind and snow loading requirements. The Key-Rex(TM) fastener is used in place of standard fasteners throughout the clamps in the design. The fastener is custom made to repel all tools and vice grips on the market. There are millions of keyways available so no two customers will own the same screw. The fasteners were installed in a large remote ground mount project on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, where they will power about 300 Kauai homes per year. If theft should occur, the thief will have to break the panel.
