Logic and Texas Instruments Offer Zoom(TM) Medical OMAP35x Development Kit and System on Modules (SOM) for Medical Innovations

The OMAP35x SOM-LV uses high-performance, low-power ARM processors to reduce development time for medical and other embedded applications

MINNEAPOLIS, June 2 -- As the desire to offer consumers smaller, easier-to-use medical products grows, Logic and Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) today released a new development kit specifically designed to quickly bring new medical products to market. The new Zoom(TM) Medical OMAP35x Development Kit and companion System on Modules (SOMs) use TI's OMAP35x processor to provide developers with a cost-effective, compact way to design and produce medical, industrial and other embedded applications. For more information, see http://www.ti.com/medicalevmpr.

The development kit allows medical product companies to easily develop sophisticated integrated medical devices with advanced graphical user interface, smart and real-time physiological processing, and wired and wireless connectivity options for patient monitoring and data logging applications. All of this is accomplished with a low cost, highly flexible software development environment, and the SOM design of the medical development kit provides rapid manufacturing to help avoid additional trials or product releases.

"TI's integrated circuit innovations empower customers to make advanced medical devices that are more flexible, affordable and accessible," said Srik Gurrapu, marketing and business development manager, Low-Power Medical Processors, TI. "The SOM module based on the OMAP35x platform will help medical customers quickly begin development and take advantage of a unique combination of high performance and very low power consumption. Having the same SOM module in the development kit greatly reduces development time investment and risk for medical customers."

OMAP(TM) processors drive innovative and easy-to-use medical products

TI's OMAP35x processors that drive these modules provide laptop-like performance at handheld power levels, with an integrated ARM® Cortex(TM)-A8 core, TMS320C64x(TM) digital signal processor (DSP), 2D/3D graphics engine and video accelerators. By combining this high-performance processor with the memory and connectivity (wired and wireless) subsystems and a full operating system into an off-the-shelf OMAP35x SOM, developers can take a superior end-product to market quickly and easily. For more information on OMAP, see http://www.ti.com/omap35xpr.

"The OMAP35x SOM will highly benefit the medical and other embedded markets," stated Kurt Larson, Product Marketing Manager for Logic. "Since the OMAP35x processors are based on high-performance, low-power ARM processors, customers can realize significant gains in horsepower and peripheral functionality, even within the tightest power constraints."

The OMAP35x processors in the 0.4mm pitch BGA package enables Package-On-Package capability to mount the memory on top of the OMAP35x processor. This means equipment manufacturers can deliver the smallest form factor and lowest power for medical and other embedded applications. These packages often require complex design and manufacturing, but the SOM module minimizes these challenges.

System on Modules (SOM) accelerate time to production

Logic has placed the OMAP35x processor onto a SOM-LV Type III form factor module. The OMAP35x SOM, measuring 31 x 76.2 x 7.4 mm (1.22 x 3 x 0.29 inches), is small enough to fit into almost any application, yet includes all necessary development interfaces for today's embedded products, including Bluetooth® 2.0 + EDR, 802.11b/g wireless Ethernet, USB 2.0 OTG, 24bpp TFT LCD controller, and four-wire touch screen.

In addition to providing the latest technologies, a variety of different operating systems can be used with the Zoom Medical OMAP35x Development Kit, including Linux, Windows® CE and Green Hills operating systems. The multiple BSPs allow developers to select an OS that best supports their needs and costs.

Price and availability

The Zoom Medical OMAP35x Development Kit (TMDXMEVM3503-L) is available in limited quantities now and will be broadly available in 3Q08 for $995.

The OMAP35x SOMs will be available for use in production quantities through Logic's distribution network. Standard SOM configurations are listed below:
