Lockheed Martin to Pilot Cloud-Based STEM Capability for Prince George's County, MD High Schools

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD. – High school students and teachers in Prince George's County, Md., are now able to access science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) enrichment resources through a secure, cloud-based environment.
The county's Division of Academics and Office of Information Technology have partnered with Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] to pilot a STEM Innovation Cloud solution for select students and teachers at Fairmont Heights, Suitland and High Point High Schools.
During the 90-day pilot program, Lockheed Martin will work with Cisco Systems, Inc.; Men Aiming Higher, Inc, a local community-based organization; and the Prince George's County Public School System (PGCPS) to provide secure community cloud and high-definition, communications platforms. These technologies will help the county to scale equitable access to STEM resources, such as cloud-enabled PGCPS STEM curriculum; high-definition multimedia recordings of discovery-based classroom experiences from mobile devices; and Lockheed Martin career simulation experiences, without physical or geographical limitations.
"This pilot program allows us to combine our technology expertise and corporate commitment to STEM education and Prince George's County to give students the necessary tools for academic success and career development," said Vicki Schmanske, vice president of information technology and security solutions for Lockheed Martin's Information Systems & Global Solutions business. "This program demonstrates forward-thinking leadership in Prince George's County for maximizing cost-effective technology, like cloud computing, and collaboration and mobility tools to deliver skills-building knowledge right into the hands of students."
Lockheed Martin will support the program with its proven Solutions as a Service (SolaS®) secure cloud delivery approach, which combines domain expertise, best-in-industry partnerships and smart technology to deliver private, community and hybrid offerings. The corporation delivered its first cloud solution in early 2009. Since then, Lockheed Martin has led the cloud evolution, developing technology and cyber security innovation centers, flexible, mission-focused cloud computing technologies and alliances with partners to provide comprehensive solutions to customers.
