Linde "flameless" REBOX® oxyfuel and other Combustion Technologies Help Steel Producers and Mills Balance Profitability and Production Demands

MURRAY HILL, N.J. and NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J. – Linde LLC ("Linde"), a global leader in technologies and industrial gases for all steps in the steel mill process chain, will feature proven solutions at AISTech 2014 to help mills strike the right balance between profitability and production objectives through improved process reliability, cost efficiency, productivity and product quality.  Linde experts will be on hand at the Indianapolis Exposition Center, May 5-8, booth #946.

In the face of stiff competition, the steel and iron industries are subject to strict regulatory controls. Various Linde solutions can also help to harmonize productivity and cost targets with environmental pressures, whether production is based on ore or scrap.

Proprietary technology from the Linde Metallurgy group includes:  1) Customized blast furnace solutions for oxygen use in heating stoves, 2) new OXYGON® systems for proven efficiency gains during preheating of ladles, and 3) REBOX® technical solutions that can increase production capacity, improve yield, cut energy costs, and reduce emissions in existing or new reheat furnaces.

At AISTech 2013, Linde and MST (South Lyon, MI) documented a 50% reduction in cycle time for reheating 4-3/4" billets in a rotary hearth furnace, and a 63% reduction in energy consumption using the REBOX® technology.

Linde is also a leading supplier of technologies such as process gas heaters, steam methane reformers, pressure swing absorption units, and carbon dioxide purification units used in natural gas-based DRI plants - growing in importance in the U.S. with the increased production and reduced cost of natural gas.(1) Linde also markets carbon dioxide that may be captured and purified from certain DRI plant configurations.

Oxyfuel Technology Pioneer

Over the past few years, Linde REBOX® technologies have become the premier method for enhancing steel reheat furnace operations. The REBOX® portfolio includes equipment and control systems for oxygen-enrichment, oxygen-lancing, oxyfuel-boosting and 100 percent oxyfuel operation in reheat furnaces and annealing lines. Linde develops and applies REBOX® technical solutions that meet the specific needs and conditions for each case.

Linde has been a pioneer in oxyfuel solutions for reheat furnaces since the 1990s and has performed more than 130 installations around the globe. In addition to more efficient energy input and increased heating rate, the precision technology offers significant environmental and maintenance advantages, including reduced scaling, and minimization of NOx formation and total flue gas emissions. In conjunction with MORE S.r.l., Linde also offers cost-saving oxyfuel and process optimization solutions for electric arc furnaces (EAFs) to produce liquid steel in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Linde, a leading global industrial gases company, provides industry-leading portfolio solutions for the ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy industries, ranging from gases and equipment to process consulting and services.
