Press release date: October 4, 2007

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN; October 4, 2007) - Laser Design Inc., the leading supplier of 3D laser scanners for more than 20 years, announced the sale of an SLP®-250 laser scanner to York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC near Charlotte, NC. The company's SLP laser scanners are fast, precise, light weight, and USB compatible for plug-and-play convenience. Accurate to within ±12µ, the SLP-250 laser scanners are an excellent choice for 3D laser scanning of small parts. The York Technical College SLP-250 was retrofitted to a manual Mitutoyo CMM system.

"We will use the Laser Design SLP-250 for many operations in our quality inspection lab," said Tom Dickerson, Manager of the Machine Tool Technology Department. "We will be able to scan intricate parts and use the 3D data in rapid prototyping, and also rapid manufacturing applications."

York Technical College is a community college with associate degree and certificate programs. The Machine Tool Technology Department has built a worldwide reputation for excellence on the merits of its 3D Center's cutting-edge equipment and in-demand graduates. York was the first school in South Carolina to be accredited by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS). With over 45,000 square feet, the department housed in the Institute for Manufacturing Productivity is home to many 3D measurement systems, including the new Laser Design laser scanner.

Department manager Dickerson believes in cooperative education through businesses and has cultivated many fruitful partnerships with companies around the globe. His personal goal is to make York Technical College's machine tool program the best anywhere in the world. The additional Laser Design system provided a technical tool to further Dickerson's vision. He asserts, "York Tech is already in the top few schools. We stay on the cutting edge not by having deep pockets, but by having good partnerships. We go outside the box a little bit."

York's industrial partners bring in projects from their customers so that students get real-world experience in helping industries with their problems. The program is so successful and professional that even Korean companies send work to be performed there. As a global training partner in 3D systems and rapid manufacturing, York Technical College garners support from international businesses. Industries that have a stake in the college are computer control equipment, EDM, bearings, automation tooling systems, turbine and generator plants, braking systems, dental equipment, NASCAR engine components, aircraft, electric motors and many more.

Industry contacts tell Dickerson, "We need quality machinists." He receives 200-250 email requests a year for York Tech graduates. 100% of the graduates last year are working in their field of study. Plus, more and more professionals are returning to York Tech for cross training.

Laser Design President C. Martin Schuster concurred, "The need for professionals trained in metrology is growing in every industry. We at Laser Design hope to have a long and mutually beneficial association with York Technical College and its graduates. By installing a Laser Design SLP laser scanner, the department is teaching students about the most advanced laser scanning technologies: superior accuracies, faster speeds, easier operation."

Laser Design, Inc., has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services for over 20 years. Used for capturing the 3D shape of objects with complex geometries and free-form surfaces, Laser Design's Surveyor line of automated and portable scanning systems are ideal for 3D scanning applications involving inspection and reverse engineering of complex shaped plastic and metal parts. The company's patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional metrology technologies. Laser Design integrates Geomagic software with its laser scanners to provide complete solutions for reverse engineering and inspection applications.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, the company also has Regional Technical Services and Support Centers in Seattle and Detroit, and distributors throughout Europe and Asia. Laser Design also operates GKS Inspection Services (www.GKS.com), an in-house service bureau division offering complete 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and dimensional inspection services.
