Presentations will highlight new opportunities in biodiesel and adhesive applications

PITTSBURGH - October 15, 2008 - LANXESS Corporation's Technical Rubber Products (TRP) business unit will showcase the attributes and benefits of its products during two presentations at this year's ACS Rubber Mini Expo in Louisville, KY, from October 14-16.

John Dewar, TRP Application and Business Development, will present a paper titled, "The Use of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Copolymers in FRNC and Adhesive Industrial Applications," explaining the application areas of LEVAPREN® rubbers and highlighting its use in Flame Retardant Non-Corrosive (FRNC) and adhesive applications. Victor Nasreddine, Ph.D., TRP Application and Business Development, will also showcase THERBAN® hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) for biodiesel applications in a paper titled, "THERBAN®/HNBR for Biodiesel Applications." Both presentations will take place on Wednesday, October 15.

Mr. Dewar's presentation will review the application areas of LEVAPREN®/ LEVAMELT® EVM rubbers. LEVAPREN® /LEVAMELT® EVM is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate which can have vinyl acetate levels ranging from 40-90%. EVM has been used for many years where there is a need for FRNC products, being especially beneficial in the wire and cable industry. The FRNC concept has led to EVM compounds being used in flooring and profiles in high-traffic public buildings where safety is especially important. The heat and oil resistance of EVM compounds enables them to be used in seals, gaskets and hoses in the automotive industry. EVM has also found its use in the adhesive industry where it can be utilized in solvent, hot melt and adhesive film applications.

Dr. Nasreddine's paper will explore the use of new THERBAN® polymers for biodiesel applications. The presentation includes aging studies performed on new fully saturated low Mooney viscosity THERBAN® AT polymers with up to 50% Acrylonitrile content at elevated temperatures and over long durations in soybean methyl ester and rapeseed methyl ester based biodiesel fuels.

THERBAN® AT polymers with high Acrylonitrile (ACN) content are especially distinctive for combining four unique performance characteristics for a fast and cost effective process. First, the ultra high ACN content allows for maximum fluid and fuel resistance. Second, these polymers are fully saturated for best heat resistance. Third, the products' improved processability offers the benefits of easier mixing, faster injection molding cycles, faster extrusion rates and smoother surfaces/edges of extruded parts. Finally, THERBAN® AT products offer versatility in compounding with the elimination or reduction of plasticizers for improved performance as well as the use of higher filler levels for lower costs.

In addition to the presentations, the TRP business will also be exhibiting various products at the show in booth #305.
