Press release date: September 19, 2006

NEW YORK --Sept. 19, 2006-- U.S. and Multinational Peacekeeping Forces Employ Revolutionary Full-Body Inspection Technologies and X-ray Screening to Detect a Wider Variety of Threats and Contraband in Iraq and Afghanistan.

L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its L-3 SafeView, Inc. subsidiary, a division of the newly established L-3 Homeland Security Group, has completed the installation of a number of active millimeter wave (MMW) body screening portals at key entry control checkpoints in Iraq's International Zone (Green Zone). Additionally, the Dutch Army has also placed an order with L-3 for an undisclosed number of MMW portals and X-ray checkpoint screening systems for their facilities in Afghanistan as part of the NATO contingent.

L-3 SafeView's portals pinpoint objects made of any material, including liquid containers, rubber, wire, plastic and metal, to quickly and easily locate weapons, contraband and other threats concealed on the body. The portals detect concealed and hidden threats such as metallic and non-metallic weapons and virtually all known explosives, drugs and other contraband in seconds.

"Supplying our armed forces with technology that keeps them safer and allows them to work faster and more efficiently is a vital part of our mission in the security industry," said Craig P. Coy, president and chief operating officer of L-3's Homeland Security Group. "Our technology makes a critical difference in strengthening checkpoint security, especially in such high-risk areas as the Green Zone and Afghanistan. The portal's enhanced detection capability is an invaluable component in the fight to protect people and facilities overseas."

"We are extremely proud to be serving our U.S. and allied soldiers, who are placed in these difficult environments every day," said Rick Rowe, president of L-3 SafeView. "This successful blending and deployment of advanced equipment and more conventional equipment to create a total checkpoint for military use also provides a clear path for other key checkpoint operations," he added. Rowe led the concept of operations (conop), training, and installation efforts in Iraq over the past year. L-3 SafeView portals are presently used for enhanced security at border crossings in Israel and international airports such as Mexico City and Amsterdam's Schiphol. These systems have also been deployed at ferry landings in Singapore, railway stations in the U.K. and government and commercial buildings in The Hague and Tokyo. L-3 also provided both conop consulting and training to the U.S. Army, multinational forces, and other key U.S. government agencies for the current installations. Installation and training of systems purchased by the Dutch Army will take place in Afghanistan in late September.

With a broad range of systems and technology, and an installed base of more than 18,000 systems worldwide, L-3 Security and Detection Systems offers screening technologies for numerous security applications that include: (1) aviation systems for hold baggage explosives detection, oversized baggage, and checkpoint screening; (2) cargo and air freight screening; (3) port and border inspection; and (4) facility protection.
