Kennametal to Receive Its Tenth Carnegie Science Honor with NOVO(TM) Digital Engineering Breakthrough


LATROBE, Pa. – Kennametal Inc. (NYSE: KMT) announced today that Vice President of Product Engineering Fred Patterson, representing a team of product and software engineers, will be honored with a 2014 Carnegie Science Award in the Advanced Manufacturing category at a ceremony on May 9. The award recognizes the Kennametal team for its vision in developing NOVO™, a groundbreaking on-demand digital system designed to optimize and streamline manufacturing processes for Kennametal customers. This marks the tenth time that Kennametal has been honored with a Carnegie Science Award for the company's forward motion and technological advancements.



NOVO™, a revolutionary solution that integrates the application engineering and production experience of Kennametal's 75-year history, is capable of providing users access to Kennametal's historical collective knowledge and more than 50,000 products. With a refined and intuitive tool advisor, selector and configurator, all aspects of the manufacturing process become more efficient - from parts quoting to programming, presetting and production.

Carnegie Science Award winners exemplify the highest levels of success in STEM research and education.  Established in 1997 by the Carnegie Science Center, the program aims to recognize and promote outstanding science and technology achievements in western Pennsylvania.  Celebrating its 18(th) year, the Carnegie Science Awards have honored the accomplishments of more than 400 individuals and organizations that have improved lives through their commitment and contributions to science and technology.



Patterson, representing the Kennametal team will be honored during a formal celebration at Carnegie Music Hall on Friday, May 9, 2014 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This marks Patterson's second Carnegie Science Award. In 2007, he and others within Kennametal's Technology team received the Corporate Innovation Award for their stage gate new product development process.
