AURORA, IL - - 11/11/2009 - - Kenneth M. Smith, Jr., P.E., mechanical and marine engineer and Senior Consultant at Engineering Systems Inc. (ESI) was recently appointed Vice Chairman of the Marine Forensics Committee, a technical and research committee of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and will also be chairing the Ship Forensics Panel. The Committee, which was elevated from an ad hoc panel status, is a joint committee with the British Royal Institute of Marine Engineers, as well as the International Marine Technology Society and ASM International.
Other committee members include naval architects with experience in marine forensics, salvors of record of various ship wrecks, along with several retired Navy Supervisors of Salvage, investigators, salvage equipment operators, and commercial salvage divers. Committee members have published technical papers and authored books on specific ship losses and forensic studies. One of the Committee's tasks in 2010 will be to publish a Ship Forensics Handbook, which will provide technical information and references on all aspects of conducting a marine forensic investigation. Tentative plans for 2011 include chairing a technical symposium in the Washington, DC area.
Mr. Smith has over 30 years experience in designing and engineering mechanical and marine systems and has been a project manager for ship and boat design and construction. He specializes in mechanical design, product liability, failure analysis, safety and manufacturing, machinery, operations, and marine salvage. He is a long-time member of SNAME, as well as other professional organizations, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in two states.
